When drafting the Constitution, they firmly rejected the idea of the United States being ruled by a King. Nonetheless, one of the Founders, John Adams, remarked on the dangers of unchecked democracy: “Democracy can be just as pernicious as monarchy and never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide. It is in vain to say that democracy is less vain, less proud, less selfish, less ambitious, or less avaricious than aristocracy or monarchy.”

In a democracy, power is meant to be held by the people and transferred peacefully through elections, not concentrated indefinitely in one leader’s hands. “What are your thoughts?
