In today’s episode of Scam DamNation with Lillian Cauldwell, we spotlight a troubling auto loan fraud scam reported by Fox News involving a major auto-loan case out of Tampa, Florida. The case highlights how fraud can occur even within trusted business environments such as auto dealerships, reminding consumers to stay alert and informed.
Auto loan fraud scams can happen anywhere — even inside legitimate businesses. Understanding how these schemes work can help consumers recognize warning signs before financial damage occurs.
In this case, Mohamad Jihad Fakih, 27, has been sentenced to four and a half years in federal prison for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and attempting to export a stolen vehicle.
Prosecutors say Fakih used his access as an auto wholesaler to file fraudulent loan applications for vehicles that did not exist. Once lenders approved the loans, the money was released and Fakih pocketed the funds.
During the investigation, authorities uncovered additional fraudulent activity. These included false insurance claims and an attempt to ship a stolen Rolls-Royce overseas. When investigators completed their review, the total financial losses connected to the scheme exceeded $372,000.
This case demonstrates an important reality: scams can occur anywhere — even within auto dealerships that appear legitimate.
That is why awareness and due diligence are essential. Whether you are applying for a vehicle loan, reviewing financing paperwork, or making a major purchase, always verify information before signing documents or transferring funds.
✨Stay alert. Stay informed. Protect yourself both at work and at home.
