Last year, one care facility was engulfed in flames when two visiting rabbis used fire torches to ritually cleanse a kitchen for Passover—without prior consultation or permission. The incident caused multiple injuries and severe burns, triggering a federal response.

Since then, emergency agencies have implemented strict Assisted Living fire protocols alongside facility directors and first responders to prevent future miscommunications. But even with those changes, Massachusetts officials are now taking a deeper look.
