In the latest episode of Lest We Forget Historical: Reproductive Rights and the Politics Surrounding Them, host Lillian Caldwell explores the Reproductive Justice movement, referencing an article by Rickie Solinger on the history of women’s reproductive rights in America. The episode critiques the governmental stance that historically, only “status” and middle-class white women were deemed suitable to reproduce. Challenging this notion, a group of African American women in the mid-90s formulated the Theory of Reproductive Justice.
This theory, now central in the 21st century, recognizes reproductive health, rights, and justice as universal human rights and asserts that every individual is entitled to: the right to have children, the right not to have children, and the right to the social, economic, and environmental conditions necessary to raise children in healthy, peaceful, and sustainable households and communities.
