Samuel Ashworth on Food, Death, and Discovery

🎙️ Chatting with Betsy: A Fascinating Conversation with Samuel Ashworth

In this compelling episode host Betsy Wurzel welcomes Samuel Ashworth—professor of Creative Writing at George Washington University and former columnist for The Rumpus. Samuel’s writing, both fiction and nonfiction, has appeared in Washington Post Magazine, Longreads, Eater, and Gawker.

Today, Samuel joins Betsy to talk about his debut novel, The Death and Life of August Sweeney. This captivating story took five years to bring to life and is deeply rooted in immersive research. Samuel shares how he worked in Michelin-starred kitchens and spent years studying clinical pathology, even assisting with autopsies, to bring authenticity to his characters.

The book follows August Sweeney, a larger-than-life celebrity chef who insists on being autopsied by a specific pathologist, Dr. Maya Zhu. In their conversation, Betsy and Samuel explore the intense world of high-end kitchens, the stress that especially affects women in the culinary and medical fields, and what Dr. Zhu uncovers—not just about August’s body, but also about herself.

Samuel emphasizes the importance of autopsies in understanding causes of death to consider consenting to them, especially at teaching hospitals. Betsy admits she had never thought about this topic before—and found herself deeply moved by what we can learn from the human body.

In Betsy’s words, “The Death and Life of August Sweeney is a fascinating read that plunges you into the culinary world, explores complex human relationships, and demystifies the autopsy process.  She couldn’t put it down!”

Samuel also shares wise advice he gives his students: “Patience is a weapon. Be patient for the opportunities you truly want—don’t just grab whatever floats by.”
