If You Knew Suzy: Defying All the Odds

In this deeply inspiring interview, Betsy Wurzel speaks with Jane Fischer, author and writer of If You Knew Suzy: Pushing Past the Boundaries of Never with Carol Ann Ross. Jane shares her powerful journey as the mother of Suzy, who was born with severe brain abnormalities. Doctors told Jane her daughter would never walk, talk, or enjoy life—and even advised her to place Suzy in a facility.

Instead, Jane chose love, persistence, and belief. With family support, unwavering advocacy, and Suzy’s own strength and determination, they proved the experts wrong. Suzy not only walked and talked—she inspired everyone around her.

Suzy was diagnosed with Joubert Syndrome, a very rare condition that took years to confirm as medical science advanced. Today, Suzy is the oldest living person with Joubert Syndrome at 51 years old, a milestone that defies expectations and celebrates the triumph of hope.

Throughout their conversation, Betsy and Jane explore how Suzy’s “can-do” spirit touched lives far beyond her own. Suzy was active in her community, encouraged others, and served as a symbol of possibility even during illness.

Jane also became a fierce advocate—first for her daughter, then for countless other families of children with special needs. A lifelong educator and Learning Consultant with a Master’s degree, Jane served on numerous committees and helped shape more inclusive environments in schools and communities.

Jane wrote If You Knew Suzy as a tribute to her daughter—whom she calls an “earth angel” for her kindness, empathy, and compassion. The book includes valuable resources for families and educators navigating similar challenges.

Betsy shared how deeply moved she was by Jane and Suzy’s journey, calling them true inspirations. Suzy’s courage to live life fully—to celebrate her Bat Mitzvah, live independently, and work as a classroom assistant—continues to inspire everyone who hears her story.
