Betsy is honored to welcome Dakarai Larriett, author of Don’t Flush: From a False Arrest to a Political Awakening — My Journey to Making a Difference. This conversation centers on Dakarai’s lived experience and the personal, legal, and emotional consequences that followed.
Dakarai Larriett is a successful entrepreneur, a committed community leader, and an active volunteer. He is also currently a political candidate seeking support as a U.S. Democratic Senate candidate in Alabama.
During this enlightening and eye-opening interview, Dakarai recounts what occurred on April 10, 2024, when he was pulled over by Michigan State Police in Benton Harbor, Michigan. What began as a routine traffic stop quickly escalated into a frightening and deeply unsettling experience.
Dakarai explains that he was accused of violating traffic rules and suspected of driving under the influence. Despite testing negative for alcohol and drugs, he was subjected to repeated questioning and sobriety tests. He shares how the state trooper mocked his name, referred to him as “Daiquiri,” commented that he “smelled fruity,” questioned whether the car belonged to him, and repeatedly suggested drug use without evidence.
The encounter ultimately resulted in Dakarai being falsely arrested. He describes being instructed to provide specimens and being told not to flush the toilet — an experience that later inspired the title of his memoir.
Betsy and Dakarai discuss how encounters like this can be especially frightening, and how fear and confusion may affect how individuals respond when questioned by law enforcement, even when they have done nothing wrong.
Following the incident, Dakarai filed formal complaints with the Michigan State Police and the Michigan Department of Civil Rights. He also submitted multiple FOIA requests for dash cam and body cam footage and filed a lawsuit against the parties involved.
Dakarai shares that the experience left him with PTSD. Rather than remaining silent, he chose to take action. He explains how this false arrest experience motivated him to run for U.S. Senate, with the goal of helping write laws that protect motorists from wrongful accusations and unjust treatment.
He is particularly passionate about advocating for a Motorist Bill of Rights that would apply across all 50 states. Dakarai also discusses discovering homophobic, transphobic, misogynistic, and racist remarks on one of the trooper’s public social media pages, which further raised concerns about accountability.
