In today’s episode of Lest We Forget Historical, America is indeed on the road again. But are we heading in the right direction? Today, we’re exploring paths taken by others before us reflecting on what they lost, how they lost it, and why we, fellow Americans, must stay vigilant to protect our democracy.
What is at stake? How are we at risk of losing it, you may ask? I believe in our system of government. It isn’t always perfect, but we all know that life is not fair. We also know that once the current president finishes their term, we can elect someone who we
believe will lead America with pride.
Is America proud? Let’s examine how other notable politicians and military leaders were elected to office and how they represented the people who voted for them. We can start with Napoleon Bonaparte. When we look back at the French Revolution, it began with good intentions. As in all conflicts, prisoners were taken and exchanged, but the revolution ultimately led to many deaths, including those of its previous rulers and dissidents. One of these figures was Napoleon, who initially had good intentions for his new government. However, his quest for power led him to attempt to conquer the world, nearly succeeding except for the harsh Russian winter and lack of supply lines. He got a second chance, but one of his allies, Prussia, decided not to fight on his side and joined Wellington instead. Or let’s consider the countries in South America where several leaders attempted coups to secure their power.
Many succeeded, but the aftermath was often dismal for the people. The United States has historically condemned these power grabs and refused to send aid or military supplies to these regimes. However, no nation is perfect, and America has sometimes allied with these same governments for strategic reasons. Throughout history, power has attracted people. You may recall the saying: Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Remember this when you see the outcomes of fervent wishes for power and consider where it might lead our nation.
Let’s also remember what Abraham Lincoln said in his Gettysburg Address: Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal…
It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us – that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion – that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain – that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom – and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
