In this episode of Chatting with Betsy, host Betsy Wurzel welcomes Dr. Catherine Madison, a neurologist and caregiver advocate, to discuss her upcoming book, Navigating Memory Loss: Essential Questions and Answers on Alzheimer’s and Dementia, which will be released on October 14th.
Dr. Madison explains the concept of anosognosia, the brain changes associated with Alzheimer’s, and promising new treatments that are showing positive results. She stresses the importance of understanding both your own diagnosis and that of a loved one, preparing for end-of-life care, and staying informed as medical knowledge continues to advance.
As a caregiver for her own mother with dementia, Dr. Madison brings both professional expertise and personal experience to the conversation. She and Betsy reflect on how few resources and support systems existed when they were caregivers, and how essential it is today to recognize when memory problems require attention.
