In the latest episode of Scam DamNation, Ms. Cauldwell explains how job seekers can avoid scams during the application process or when accepting a job through a fraudulent interview. According to Axios, in 2023, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported approximately 105,000 ‘business and job opportunity’ scams, with victims losing an estimated $450 million.

This represents a significant increase over the past five years, largely attributed to the growth of remote work and advancements in AI technology.

Fake job listings often appear on social media and legitimate job sites, requesting candidates to pay a fee to apply or start working, as reported by Indeed.
Work-from-home job scams promise flexibility and easy income, but may require payment for worthless starter kits, training, or certifications, warns the FTC. Victims may also experience unauthorized credit card charges or become entangled in fake check scams.
Indeed notes that imposters may pose as representatives of a company or recruitment firm, often demanding a screening fee via gift cards or wire transfer.
Scams involving job placement and career consulting occur when someone claiming to be a career consultant compliments your resume and offers to enhance it or refer you to a supposed expert for a fee, according to Indeed.
