In this informative interview, Betsy Wurzel discusses vocational education benefits with Dr. Nelva Lee and why practical skills can help students prepare for successful careers. Their conversation highlights how students can learn valuable trade skills before deciding whether to pursue a traditional college degree.
Betsy shared her own experience attending a vocational high school in the 1970s and reflected on how vocational schools and their students were sometimes given an unfair reputation. Despite that stigma, many students developed valuable skills that allowed them to build successful and stable careers.
Over time, many Baby Boomers were encouraged to attend college and later encouraged their children to do the same. While higher education can open doors, this strong push toward four-year degrees has also created a shortage of skilled tradespeople such as plumbers, electricians, and auto mechanics. Dr. Lee explained that vocational education benefits students because they gain hands-on experience and practical skills before investing money in a college degree.
For example, someone interested in becoming a lawyer might first obtain a paralegal certificate and work in the legal field to determine if that career path truly fits their interests before pursuing law school. Betsy also shared that several of her former classmates began their careers as Licensed Practical Nurses and later continued their education to become Registered Nurses.
Another important part of the conversation focused on advocacy. Betsy spoke about advocating for her son Josh, while Dr. Lee discussed homeschooling her son who is on the Autism Spectrum. Both emphasized how important it is for parents and individuals to advocate for educational opportunities and to choose paths that best support each student’s strengths and needs.
Dr. Lee also discussed her candidacy for Superintendent of Schools in Georgia and the changes she would like to implement. Among her ideas are expanding school choice through an $8,000 school voucher and strengthening vocational education opportunities so students can develop career skills earlier in their education.
Dr. Lee also shared how her own life experiences inspired the books she has written. She encourages others to use their experiences to help others, persevere during challenges, and discover their own strengths and purpose.
