Betsy Wurzel had the honor of interviewing chess legend Rebel Queen Susan Polgar about her groundbreaking book, Rebel Queen: The Cold War, Misogyny, and the Making of a Female Grandmaster. In this inspiring conversation, Betsy highlights the struggles, triumphs, and legacy of a woman who forever changed the world of chess.

Susan Polgar is recognized as one of the greatest players in history. At just 21, she became the first woman to earn the men’s Grandmaster title — chess’s highest designation. She went on to win the “Triple Crown” of chess, and remains the only player, male or female, to capture all six of the game’s most prestigious crowns.

Beyond her own victories, Susan built powerhouse chess dynasties at Texas Tech and Webster University, guiding her teams to more national titles, world championships, and Olympiad medals than all other U.S. college chess programs combined.

During the Rebel Queen Susan Polgar interview, Susan opened up about her early years in Cold War Budapest, where she faced sabotage, political scrutiny, anti-Semitism, and even an assault at just 12 years old. Despite overwhelming obstacles, her determination never faltered. With the encouragement of her parents and the inspiration of her grandmother, a Holocaust survivor, Susan pressed forward with grit and resilience.

Her story is not only about championships but also about breaking barriers. Susan founded the Susan Polgar Foundation, a nonprofit that promotes chess as an educational tool for children around the world. Her remarkable journey was also featured in the National Geographic documentary My Brilliant Brain, available on YouTube.

In recognition of her extraordinary impact, Susan was inducted into the U.S. Chess Hall of Fame in 2019 and the World Chess Hall of Fame in 2023, making her the only woman to receive both honors.

Betsy strongly recommends reading Rebel Queen, available on Amazon and through Susan Polgar’s website. To learn more about her nonprofit work, visit the Susan Polgar Foundation.
