Life Storms History🎧 Listen now as WW2 Pacific atrocities are explored in this insightful audio interview explaining why it matters.  Listen Here

In this powerful and eye-opening interview, Betsy Wurzel explores WW2 Pacific atrocities history with historian and author Jenny Chan. Jenny shares how her interest in history began with her grandmother’s belongings—items stored in a box that led her to question what had happened in China and across Pacific Asia during World War II.

“This is a difficult but important conversation that brings hidden history into the light.”

What are WW2 Pacific atrocities and why is it important to understand them? These are often overlooked events, including the suffering of “Comfort Women,” the human experimentation conducted at Unit 731, and the devastating impact of war on civilians. Learning about WW2 Pacific atrocities history helps us understand the full human cost of war and ensures these stories are not forgotten.

Jenny Chan explains that her work is not meant to shock, but to educate. She was deeply moved by the experiences of the Comfort Women, many of whom remained silent about their trauma for decades. The conversation also explores the horrific human experimentation at Unit 731, which paralleled other wartime atrocities occurring in different parts of the world.

Betsy and Jenny discuss how war affects everyone—not only soldiers, but also the men, women, and children who lived through it. At that time, PTSD was not yet recognized as a diagnosis, yet the emotional and psychological impact was profound and long-lasting.

Betsy shares a deeply personal connection through her father, Howard Wurzel, who served aboard the USS Bunker Hill. She reflects on what her father told her about surviving the Okinawa Battle, when his ship was struck by kamikaze attacks twice. These memories remind us that history is not distant—it is carried forward through the voices and experiences of those who lived it.

The discussion also includes the Philippines, the Bataan Death March, and the Nanjing Massacre—events that are part of WW2 Pacific atrocities history and continue to shape how we understand the past.
