Matt explains that an impulsive decision to sell a car belonging to his employer, after not receiving his sales commission, resulted in a conviction for larceny and an 18-month jail sentence. This marked the beginning of his experiences within the criminal justice system.

The first time Matt went to jail was in 2004. During his incarceration, he describes being bullied, assaulted, and placed in solitary confinement. Matt later served a second 18-month sentence for a separate offense involving identity theft. Throughout the conversation, Matt speaks honestly about how incarceration can create a vicious cycle—where individuals struggle to find employment due to a criminal record and may commit crimes simply to survive.

Betsy and Matt also discuss how the criminal justice system could better support rehabilitation by teaching job skills during incarceration and assisting with employment opportunities after release. These efforts, Matt explains, could reduce repeat offenses and help individuals successfully reintegrate into society.
