🎧 Listen now as Matt Melvin shares the powerful story behind Bullied Behind Bars, reflecting on bullying, incarceration, accountability, and why support and second chances matter. 📖 Listen Here
In this compelling episode of Chatting with Betsy, Betsy Wurzel welcomes Matt Melvin, author of Bullied Behind Bars, who shares his personal story in the hope of helping others better understand bullying, incarceration, and the long-term consequences of life-altering decisions. Matt speaks openly about his experiences while emphasizing reflection, accountability, and the need for support rather than isolation.
Betsy Wurzel’s guest, Matt Melvin, is an author, writer, autism advocate, and activist. Matt discusses growing up as a youth who was bullied and later learning he had Asperger’s and ADHD, which contributed to impulsive decision-making.
Matt explains that an impulsive decision to sell a car belonging to his employer, after not receiving his sales commission, resulted in a conviction for larceny and an 18-month jail sentence. This marked the beginning of his experiences within the criminal justice system.
The first time Matt went to jail was in 2004. During his incarceration, he describes being bullied, assaulted, and placed in solitary confinement. Matt later served a second 18-month sentence for a separate offense involving identity theft. Throughout the conversation, Matt speaks honestly about how incarceration can create a vicious cycle—where individuals struggle to find employment due to a criminal record and may commit crimes simply to survive.
Betsy and Matt also discuss how the criminal justice system could better support rehabilitation by teaching job skills during incarceration and assisting with employment opportunities after release. These efforts, Matt explains, could reduce repeat offenses and help individuals successfully reintegrate into society.
Matt encourages listeners to become reflective listeners, to speak out against bullying, and to seek support rather than isolate themselves. His motivation in sharing his story is to help others avoid similar paths and to understand the weight of consequences, as he reflects, “You can choose the crime, but not the consequences.”
