Who would have thought eight months ago our world would be turned upside down by COVID-19 and our youth would be kept home from school and denied social interaction with friends and family? There is an unsettling rise in teen suicide, and we need to know how to help our teens. Today we will learn when is the right time to speak to our teens about suicide and the warnings signs to watch for.
Joining me is Lauren Stallings, a California Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who has spent her career advocating for mental health and suicide prevention. Her counseling experience with children and families spans over 15 years through multiple settings. Lauren has spent a majority of those years in the school setting providing School-Based Mental Health services to students and their families. Lauren is most proud of being the leader of the first California High School to initiate a “Hope Squad” program. Hope Squad is a Peer-Based Suicide Prevention program based out of Utah aimed at training youth on de-stigmatizing mental health, knowing the signs of suicide, and ultimately leading their peers to help and safety. Lauren also regularly trained school staff on Suicide Prevention and is passionate about sharing her expertise on the subject.
