Today’s guest is Debbie DeMoss Compton, a Certified PAC Caregiving Consultant, Advocate Community Educator for the Alzheimer’s Association, experienced caregiver for three family members, and author of several books. She is also the CEO and founder of The Purple Vine, LLC.
This is Debbie’s third visit to “Chatting with Betsy.” In this interview, she discusses her new book, “The Caregiver’s Advocate: A Complete Guide to Support and Resources,” which will be available on July 2nd. The book features contributions from 21 different writers, each with their specialties to support caregivers on their journeys. Betsy has previously interviewed two of these writers, Alexis Baker and Rena Yudkowsky, on “Chatting with Betsy, will be interviewing another contributor, Dr. Carol Sargent, in September.
Debbie explains how she selected the writers and highlights her chapter on “Caregiver Burnout.” We delve into the causes of caregiver burnout, the importance of self-care, having a support system, and caring for mental health. We also emphasize the need for caregivers to be educated about their loved one’s diagnosis, what to expect, and how to manage behaviors. Reflecting on their own experiences, they spoke about the scarcity of information and resources available during their caregiving journey.
The book lists numerous excellent resources for caregivers, and Betsy is so honored that “Chatting with Betsy” is included as one of the resources. Debbie also shares insights about her business, The Purple Vine, LLC, which offers coaching and a wealth of information to assist caregivers. We explored how our faith had helped us overcome the challenges of caregiving.
