Betsy had the pleasure of speaking with Stephanie Woodman, the #1 International Bestselling Author of Eye Contact Over Truk. Before becoming an author, Stephanie had a long career as an engineer and also spent some time as a high school math teacher.
The Story Behind Eye Contact Over Truk
Stephanie shared the fascinating journey of how her book came to life. In 1996, she went scuba diving at Truk Lagoon, where she saw haunting shipwrecks from World War II. That experience sparked a story in her mind—one that took shape over the years and was finally completed in 2021, after many life experiences and her retirement.
During our conversation, Stephanie detailed her creative process, how she developed her characters, and the extensive historical research involved in blending historical fiction with real-life events.
A Personal Connection
This book holds a deep personal meaning for Betsy. It mentions the USS Bunker Hill, a Navy ship my father, Howard Wurzel, served on when it was attacked twice. While my father rarely spoke about his experiences at Truk, I knew about other locations where he had served. Stephanie’s book gave me new insight into a part of history that isn’t widely known—the Battle of Truk.
Themes of War and Its Aftermath
Our discussion touched on how Eye Contact Over Truk captures both perspectives of war—the American and Japanese viewpoints—as well as the long-term effects on veterans, witnesses, and families. The book delves into themes of loss, grief, survivor’s guilt, and PTSD, painting a deeply moving and emotional picture of war’s impact.
Stephanie described the stunning beauty of Truk Lagoon and explained why this location was so critical for the U.S. military during World War II. She even referred to the attack on Truk as “The Japanese Pearl Harbor.”
Another important topic we discussed was mental health care for veterans. In the past, these issues were rarely acknowledged, but today, there are more resources available for those who have served.
